This animation explains how nitrogen moves through soil, water, plants, animals, and the atmosphere. It shows that nitrogen is necessary for life, but it also makes clear that the cycle can become dangerous when too much fertilizer, waste, or runoff enters lakes, rivers, and coastal waters.

When excess nutrients build up, algae can grow very quickly and form harmful blooms. As that material dies and decomposes, oxygen levels in the water drop, which can stress or kill fish and other aquatic life. The project connects the nitrogen cycle to eutrophication and shows why reducing runoff and managing nutrients carefully matters.
